Did you know that coffee beans are the seeds of a fruit similar to a cherry? Did you know that most of the world's coffee is grown by small-scale coffee farming families? Coffee is actually the world's second most traded commodity, taking a backseat only to petroleum, with the coffee market earning nearly sixty billion dollars annually. The importance of coffee in the world cannot be denied; here are some coffee facts and statistics that coffee aficionados may not even know.

Coffee trees can only be grown where there is no winter frost. Many varieties of coffee plant exist, but only two are cultivated: the Arabica, and the Robusta. The Arabica is considered to be the best quality, but can only be grown above an altitude of 2000 feet, while the Robusta can grow below. It takes three to five years for a coffee tree to reach maturity; in one year, the average yield from a single tree is approximately one roasted pound of coffee. Coffee cherries usually contain two beans, except for the single peaberry anomaly. The peaberry is considered the 'caviar' of coffees in some regions, while other regions discard the peaberry as below-grade product.

Coffee is grown in over fifty-three countries worldwide, all of them located near the equator between the tropic of Cancer and Capricorn. Brazil is the largest coffee producing region, with around 30% of total world output of coffee. Colombia ranks second. Nearly seven million tons of green coffee beans are produced each year worldwide, and the majority of those are hand-picked beans. Coffee farmers earn as little as four cents per pound for these hand-picked beans; for every pound of gourmet coffee sold, small-coffee farmers earn just over twelve cents. The fair trade movement is aimed at redistributing profits so that these farmers receive a decent wage for their hard work. No coffee is grown in the United States or its territories except in Hawaii and Puerto Rico.

Today, US coffee drinkers consume approximately 3.1 cups per day on average, with the cup size being nine ounces. Fifty-two percent of Americans over the age of eighteen drink coffee every morning, and on top of that, thirty percent of the population drinks coffee occasionally, meaning that over eighty percent of Americans consume coffee. Sixty-five percent of consumers add sweetener. On average, coffee drinkers will spend $164.71 per year on coffee, and coffee drinkers that get a cup to go from a local coffeehouse before work will wait in line nearly forty-five hours each year! Coffee is the leading source of caffeine consumption in the United States, and is the world's second most popular drink after water. Men and women have similar coffee habits, both consuming the same amount of coffee each day, but with different reasons for doing so. While women indicate that coffee is a good way to relax, men say that coffee helps them get their job done. Generally, women are more concerned about the price of coffee than men.

Of the one hundred million US daily coffee drinkers, thirty million drink specialty beverages such as lattes, cappuccinos, and mochas. The average price for these espresso drinks is nearly twice that of a regular brewed coffee. As the consumption of these specialty drinks rises (it does each year), more and more coffee shops will begin to sprout up throughout the United States. It has been projected that there will be 50,000+ coffee shops nationwide by 2010.

While many of us enjoy it each morning, we know very little about coffee facts and statistics - like where a coffee bean comes from! You now can impress your friends with your coffee trivia expertise.

RETIRING GATES SUPERVISOR ESPOSITO
TO KICK OFF CHILDREN’S STORY TIME

GATES: Gates Supervisor Ralph Esposito will kick off Melon Bean Eatery’s “Summer Story Time” on Tuesday, June 30, by reading Amelia Bedelia. a children’s story based on author Peggy Parish’s adventures in North Africa.

“I was inspired to ask him to be the first guest reader when I heard that he was retiring to spend more time with his grandchildren,” said Andrea Hughes, Melon Bean owner. The trendy new Buffalo Road café appeals to all demographics, but has catered especially to families.

“After serving the people of Gates for 20 years, I decided that it was time to spend more time with my wife, children, and six grandchildren, “ Esposito said. “Amelia Bedelia is my favorite children’s book, and I am excited about reading it to the kids,” he said. “It will be a great opportunity to do something more for my youngest constituents.”

Hughes opened Melon Bean Eatery in January, and works to provide customers with a healthy meal option and a comfortable atmosphere. The Rochester Democrat and Chronicle stated, “Isn’t it nice to find a happy hybrid of Starbucks and Chuck E. Cheese.” According to the Rochester City Paper, “What sets it apart is its dedication to the younger crowd with a play area and a special kids menu.” Melon Bean Eatery has a full lunch menu and a complete selection of Finger Lakes Coffee.

Summer Story Time begins on Tuesday, June 30 at 10:30 AM, and will be held every Tuesday at 10:30 AM through the summer. Hughes is looking for other “celebrity” guest readers to read their favorite children’s books.

The Melon Bean Eatery is located at 1308 Buffalo Road. It is open Monday – Saturday, and features a special Kid’s Craft Night on Fridays at 5:30 PM.

Gates' Melon Bean caters to kids, adults

Andrea Hughes is a working mother of two young girls, so it's understandable that she resorts to Kraft Macaroni & Cheese and crust-free PBJs for lunch and dinner.

The funny thing is, she does so at the restaurant she opened in January.

Who in their right mind would go out for lunch and order such juvenile victuals?

Juveniles, of course. Hughes' Melon Bean Eatery in Gates welcomes kids with a secluded padded play area that includes a kiddy kitchen and closet full of craft supplies that get pulled out every Friday evening for the critters to nurture their inner geniuses (the college tuition bill will come soon enough — the weekly craft night is free).

Meanwhile, parental units can nurture their woefully neglected inner adult over lattes, panini (the grilled ham and pineapple will only elicit "yucks" from the youngsters), wraps (careful, the kids might want your peanut butter and banana wrap with chocolate chips), salads (how about your own plate of apples, greens, walnuts and feta?) or cheesecake (from Cheesy Eddie's) at real café tables. If the kids need a minor refueling, wholesome snacks (cheese sticks, fruit cups, yogurt, applesauce, cereal bars) are on hand.

Isn't it nice to find a happy hybrid of Starbucks and Chuck E. Cheese's?

Of course, you don't have to be a kid to go crustless. The usual for one customer, a big, brawny construction worker, happens to be two PBJs from the "Kids Sammies" list, according to Hughes. Yours truly couldn't resist the mac and cheese, served in a little granny-esque bowl, but thrown over my romaine, tomato and red onion salad and mixed altogether in a way that surely would have annoyed my mom several decades ago.

I don't have any offspring to add to the ambiance, but I did enjoy getting the "best of" list from Hughes' pretty-in-pink 4-year-old, Ava. She recommends her mom's soup, even though it came off the menu when the snow went away.

Just wanted to say "Thanks" to the westside moms group that came out last night to our place. Your support is appreciated greatly.
I can't say it enough times in a day but thanks to all our family and friends who continue to support Melon Bean Eatery on a daily, weekly and monthly basis. The City newspaper is doing a story on our place and it will be published next week sometime. I am sure it will be online too just google our name if you can't find one to pick up. City is coming out tonight for Craft Night to take some pictures so if you have no plans bring in the kids. We will be making butterflies tonight in hopes of some good weather to come. I will also have the craft from last week (Fish) if anyone wants to do that one too.

So we are finally opening! Monday January 26th, 2009. Our inspections are done and we are ready to serve you. Our hours will be: M-Th 7am-8pm, Fri & Sat 7am-9pm and closed on sundays.
